Tainted Tap: East Manatee Well Water Contamination from Pesticides
Hi, I’m Kevin from AOK Water Services.
I work with families all across East Manatee County—places like Parrish, Myakka City, and Duette—and I want to talk to you about something most folks don’t think about: what’s really in your well water.
A lot of people believe if your water comes from a well, it must be clean.
I wish that were true. But I’ve seen firsthand how farm chemicals from nearby fields can end up in your tap water—even if it looks, smells, and tastes fine.
The Problem With Farm Runoff
Manatee County has a significant amount of farmland, which is beneficial for growing food, but not always ideal for drinking water.
Pesticides and herbicides used on crops can leach into the soil and contaminate groundwater every time it rains.
That same groundwater feeds the wells we rely on.
Some of the common chemicals I test for in this area include:
- Atrazine – This one’s linked to hormone issues and has even shown up in baby formula in some parts of the country.
- Glyphosate (Roundup) – This chemical has been in the news because of its possible link to cancer.
- 2,4-D – Another common farm chemical that can affect your kidneys, thyroid, and more.
These don’t just disappear. They can stay in your water for years.
How Do You Know If It’s in Your Water?
That’s the hard part—most pesticide contamination doesn’t have a smell, taste, or color.
But I tell homeowners to look for a few red flags:
- You live near farms or open fields
- Your water has a strong smell after it rains
- You or your kids keep getting sick without a clear reason
Even if you don’t notice anything strange, I always recommend testing if you’re on a well and live near agricultural land.
What You Can Do About It
At AOK Water Services, I offer free water testing for homes in East Manatee.
If your water has pesticides, chlorine byproducts, or other contaminants, I’ll explain what’s going on and give you honest options for fixing it.
For this kind of contamination, I recommend whole-house filtration systems.
These use special carbon filters designed to catch pesticides and other harmful stuff before it reaches your taps. It protects every sink, shower, and appliance in your home.
